Do You Need a Premium Office Chair for Your Home Office?

October 2nd, 2020 | Best Office Furniture

As the Coronavirus pandemic evolves, workplaces are still restricted to function at full capacity. Work schedules are staggered among teams to limit office density and those who can perform their duties well remotely are encouraged to stay home.

However, most home offices are not equipped with the same quality furniture as you have in the office, which makes it very challenging to work eight or more hours a day. Some don’t even have a proper office and convert parts of their houses (like the kitchen or the bedroom) as a workstation.

And this might leave you wondering: is a premium office chair worth the splurge? Premium office chairs can cost hundreds of dollars. You would want to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.

Let’s take a look at what makes premium chairs so expensive and if it’s worth investing in for your home office.

Why are Premium Office Chairs so Expensive?

When it comes to office furniture, you always get what you pay for. High-end chairs are designed to be comfortable and provide you with adequate support especially if you have long work hours. They have many adjustable parts to fit your preference. Features like adjustable height for armrests and back comfort are definitely a bonus you’d want to have in an office chair.

These chairs are also meant to last for a very long time. They are typically made of high quality fabrics and parts, which are guaranteed to look good and remain functional for the long term.

These chairs are like a designer handbag. It’s meant to be repaired and kept, not replaced. Even after your warranty expires, you will still be able to get these units repaired and replacement parts are pretty much available.

Is it Worth the Money?

Although it’s not required for every home office to invest in a premium chair, it makes a solid good investment especially for those who work long hours.

If you work for eight hours or more daily, getting a high-end chair is definitely worth it. If you only work from home three hours a day or a few days a week, or you prefer working at a coffee shop or coworking space, you may consider a more affordable option.

Calculate how many hours you’ll spend in the chair for the foreseeable future and over a period of years. It’s easier to justify your costs if you have a clear idea of how much use you’ll get out of it.

Discomfort is one of the main reasons why people invest in premium office furniture. If you are experiencing back pain sitting in your current chair, this might be a clear sign you need a new one.

Since premium chairs are highly customizable, it can easily be adjusted to fit your body. If you feel more comfortable, it will be easier to work long hours and not get distracted by any pain. This eventually leads to improved work performance.

Are you sharing your home office with the rest of the family? Since premium office chairs are basically customized to your personal needs, the same settings and adjustments may not be as comfortable to other people who will be using the chair. It’s counterproductive to keep adjusting your chair for every person who will use it. Therefore, for multiple users, a premium chair may not be a wise investment.

Don’t forget to weigh in your budget. If you have a tight budget, getting a premium chair might not be a priority. Make an investment when the budget for it comes. Also check in with your employer.  Many employers will either provide or reimburse employees for home office furniture, as it is in their best interest to keep their employees happy and productive.

Premium chairs can be a luxury and an investment at the same time. If you have the resources to avail one, it’s definitely a worthwhile investment to improve your work-from-home quality of life.
